Kids Ask, We Answer: Growing Together

Family Friday #12

What’s your kid’s latest "why" about God? Maybe it came during bedtime, or perhaps right in the middle of dinner: “Why did Jesus have to die?” or “How can God hear everybody praying at once?” Children's questions can be unexpected and challenging—but they're also a sign that God is already at work in their hearts.

In Deuteronomy 6:20, God anticipated these curious conversations:

“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes…?’ then you shall say…”

Notice God didn’t say “if” your child asks, but “when.” Questions about faith aren’t obstacles; they’re invitations. Your child’s curiosity isn’t just natural—it’s divine. God built their young minds to wonder, explore, and ultimately discover more of who He is. Each question your child asks is a doorway into deeper discipleship for your entire family.

Think of Jesus with His disciples—answering questions, asking questions back, and using everyday moments to teach deep truths about the Kingdom. Jesus never dismissed questions. Instead, He used them to lead His followers toward greater faith. Similarly, your home is a classroom where Jesus continues to teach through you—moms and dads who faithfully engage with their kids' honest wonder.

This week, don’t just answer your child’s question—welcome it. Turn the conversation into a two-way street. Respond thoughtfully, but also ask them questions in return. "What do you think?" or "How does that make you feel about God?" By doing this, you're helping them form a faith that’s active, personal, and deeply rooted in Scripture.

At Redeemer, we believe questions are crucial. They help us, adults and children alike, to see Jesus more clearly. So when your child asks "why," see it as a holy moment—one that God prepared specifically for your family to grow in faith together.
