Why Church Membership Matters
(Membership Monday #1)
Have you ever wondered if church membership is just an outdated tradition? In a world where you can tune in online or casually drop by a different place of worship each Sunday, the idea of committing to one local church might feel, well, unnecessary. Yet there’s something powerful about knowing you’re truly part of a spiritual family—a place where people genuinely care for your soul and where you contribute to the mission God has given His people.
At Redeemer, we often talk about being a “Gospel-Centered, Disciple-Making Family.” And here’s the thing about family: it implies commitment. No, the Bible doesn’t contain the modern phrase “church membership,” but it does paint a clear picture of devoted, accountable community. In Acts 2:42–47, believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, and shared life. They weren’t just casual consumers; they were “all in.” Likewise, Hebrews 13:17 highlights that shepherds (pastors, elders) are charged with caring for specific believers—knowing who exactly they’re watching over.
Today, we translate that biblical principle into what many call “membership.” At Redeemer, we see it less like a club membership and more like a covenantal bond. It’s our way of saying, “I’m all in with you, and you’re all in with me.” When people formally commit, it strengthens the entire congregation: you know you’re surrounded by brothers and sisters who want the best for you spiritually, who will celebrate your joys, carry your burdens, and pursue growth in Christ alongside you.
So why does this matter? Because God designed His people to flourish in fellowship, accountability, and mission. When you move from mere attendance to real belonging, you start to experience the church as a vibrant family. You’ll find deeper discipleship—others speaking truth into your life, praying for you when trials come, and equipping you to serve. You’ll discover the joy of having leaders who genuinely care about your spiritual journey. And you’ll see that your contributions—whether serving in a ministry, encouraging a friend, or simply showing up faithfully—help build an atmosphere where Jesus is exalted.
Ask yourself: “Am I ready to move from being a church visitor to belonging to a church family?” Over the next several Mondays, we’ll explore what Redeemer calls “Covenant Partnership” and why it shapes everything we do. We’ll look at how you can take intentional steps toward a deeper connection—and the beautiful fruit God often brings when we commit to a local body of believers.
We’re so glad you’re joining us on this journey. Jesus loves His church, and when we commit to a local expression of it, we tap into something life-changing—real discipleship, real family. Thanks for reading; see you next Monday!
