Re-Covenant: Why We Renew Partnership Annually
Membership Monday #10
Ever hear about an annual membership renewal and wonder, “Is this some kind of gimmick?” Let’s clear the air: at Redeemer, our re-covenant process isn’t about red tape or legalism. Instead, it’s about family alignment. Think of it this way: relationships change, people move, and faith journeys ebb and flow. Each year, our Covenant Partners pause to reaffirm that we’re still in sync on our shared doctrine, mission, and family life (see Amos 3:3 about walking together in agreement). It’s a moment to say a joyful “yes” to staying the course—or, if circumstances have changed, to gracefully transition without confusion.
Why do we take this extra step? Because we believe healthy relationships require open communication. Just like you might reevaluate life goals in a marriage or discuss future plans in a job, our church family benefits from intentional check-ins. Over the past year, maybe you grew deeper in a Gospel Community, discovered new ways to serve, or realized your family’s schedule has shifted dramatically. The re-covenant process gives you space to say, “Yes, I’m still all in!” or “I might need to step back for a season,” all while keeping things transparent.
Think of it as an opportunity to celebrate what God’s been doing in and through you. Often, we get so busy that we forget to look back. Re-covenanting encourages reflection: “How have I grown? In what areas has God stretched my faith?” It also propels us forward: “What’s next for me in serving, loving others, or deepening my discipleship?” The Bible is full of moments when God’s people remember His works and renew their commitments—this is simply our modern-day expression of that.
Practically, re-covenanting usually means filling out a quick online form and/or joining our special “Vision & Re-Covenant Connection” after a Sunday Worship Service. There, we cast vision for the coming year and share the stories that have shaped us. None of this is meant to be an obligation; it’s designed to foster unity and clarity. We want to ensure everyone who calls Redeemer home is fully supported, shepherded, and equipped for the season ahead.
So, when renewal season comes around, don’t see it as a chore. Embrace it as a chance to reaffirm your connection to this Gospel-Centered, Disciple-Making Family—or to graciously pivot if God’s leading you elsewhere. Being intentional about commitment keeps us unified and aligned with the Holy Spirit’s work in our community.
Next Monday, we’ll look at handling tough topics like conflict resolution and church discipline—because, yes, even in a loving family, challenges arise. Stay tuned as we explore how biblical principles guide us through those waters!
