Power in Our Hearts: Scripture’s Witness at Redeemer

Theology Tuesday #6

Have you ever paused to marvel at just how majestic the Bible is? Sixty-six books, written by multiple authors across centuries, yet unified in pointing us to God’s redemptive plan. According to our doctrinal statement, the “majesty of their content” stands as one of the most compelling evidences that Scripture is truly God-breathed. You see it in the way Genesis lays a foundation of creation and covenant, culminating in Revelation’s vision of ultimate restoration—all centering on Christ.

But there’s more to it than just literary grandeur or historical cohesion. Romans 8:16 reminds us that the Holy Spirit testifies inwardly, confirming the truth to our hearts. While the Bible’s unity and wisdom catch our intellect, the Spirit moves at a deeper level—sealing within us the confidence that God is speaking. It’s one thing to admire Scripture’s cultural or philosophical contributions; it’s another to have it come alive within you, stirring awe and faith.

At Redeemer, we often describe Scripture as “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). We see it firsthand in sermons that convict, small-group studies that ignite fresh understanding, and personal devotions that speak precisely into our struggles. This aliveness isn’t random; it’s the Spirit Himself applying God’s Word to our minds and hearts. In practical terms, that might look like someone reading a familiar passage and suddenly grasping a profound layer they never saw before. Or it could be a sermon on forgiveness hitting a sore spot, leading them to reconcile a broken relationship.

So how do we respond? First, we humbly receive God’s Word, expecting the Spirit to illuminate and transform us. Yes, we value historical context, good hermeneutics, and thoughtful discussion—but we remember that only the Holy Spirit can make these truths sing in our souls. Second, we let Scripture shape our worship, discipleship, and everyday actions. When we read it, we invite the Spirit to spark conviction and hope, grounding our faith not in human opinion but in divine revelation.

Ultimately, “Scripture shines, and the Spirit stirs Redeemer to believe.” That’s the heart of Section 5: a marriage of majestic truth and inward testimony. God not only gave us an awe-inspiring Book, but He also meets us in it, enlivening our belief and fueling our worship. Next Tuesday, we’ll dive into how Scripture is sufficient for all of life and godliness (Chapter I, Section 6). Until then, let’s keep opening our Bibles and asking the Spirit to light up our hearts with the living Word.
