More than Enough: Scripture’s Fullness at Redeemer

Theology Tuesday #7

When life throws curveballs—new challenges, ethical dilemmas, questions about God’s will—where do we turn for answers? At Redeemer, we believe the Bible stands unique, sufficient to guide us in all matters of faith and practice. In Chapter I, Section 6 of our doctrinal statement, we see it described as containing “everything necessary for God’s glory, for our salvation, faith, and life.” Simply put, there’s nothing we truly need for our Christian walk that can’t be found within the pages of Scripture.

Consider 2 Timothy 3:16–17, which teaches that all Scripture is God-breathed, equipping us for “every good work.” That’s a comprehensive statement. It isn’t saying the Bible is merely helpful; it’s asserting that the Word of God is complete—covering the essentials of salvation, ethics, worship, and spiritual wisdom. Through its teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness, we find ourselves thoroughly prepared to honor Jesus in every sphere of life.

So, what does that look like in our day-to-day at Redeemer? For one, we reject so-called “new revelations” or extra-biblical truths that claim to supersede the Bible. While God can speak powerfully through preaching, the gifts of the Spirit, or personal discernment, these must always align with—and never contradict—Scripture. We refuse to add new layers of supposed doctrinal authority on top of what God has already revealed. From our leadership structure to our children’s ministry, from Sunday sermons to Gospel Community discussions, we operate from the principle that Scripture is more than enough.

Does this mean the Bible directly addresses every 21st-century scenario, like social media or AI ethics? Not in a bullet-point list. But it does give us the timeless truths and principles we need to navigate those issues wisely. As we rely on the Spirit’s illumination, we glean God’s perspective on loving our neighbors, guarding our hearts, and faithfully stewarding our gifts—truths that apply across generations.

“Redeemer finds all in God’s Word—nothing’s lacking.” That’s not just a catchy phrase; it’s a heartfelt conviction. We believe God, the Author of life, has provided the perfect blueprint for salvation and sanctification. Instead of craving novelty, we immerse ourselves in these inspired words, trusting the Holy Spirit to shape our minds, direct our decisions, and anchor our hope in Christ.

Next Tuesday, we’ll talk about Scripture’s clarity—how, even though some parts are more challenging, the message of salvation stands out plain and accessible. Until then, let’s celebrate the fullness of God’s Word, remembering that He’s given us exactly what we need to love Him, love others, and walk faithfully in this world.
